Faroese Wool Flag Halyard — A Material Rooted in the North
Nature Woven Into Design
What began as a shared curiosity — to reimagine a raw, local material within contemporary Danish design — evolved into a collaboration rooted in respect for nature and heritage.
Far out in the North Atlantic, the Faroe Islands rise from the sea — shaped by wind, weather, and tradition. Here, sheep have roamed freely for centuries, tended by families who live in rhythm with the landscape. This is where the story of the Wool Flag Halyard begins.
Local Wool, Durable Design
The idea of crafting a flag halyard from unused sheep wool was envisioned by designer Kasper Thorup together with native Faroese textile designer Ragnhild Hjalmarsdóttir.
What began as a shared curiosity — to reimagine a raw, local material within contemporary Danish design — evolved into a collaboration rooted in respect for nature and heritage.
Elegantly adapted to withstand the demands of high altitudes and the ever-changing Faroese weather, the pure wool is a sturdy, resilient fibre that embodies the spirit of its origin. Through refinement and careful handling, it transforms into a soft, sophisticated material — perfectly suited for furniture upholstery and everyday use.
The Wool — Crafted by Nature
Faroese wool is a reflection of its origin — dense, durable, and full of character. The fibers are naturally weather-resistant, infused with lanolin that protects the sheep from the harsh coastal climate.
We preserve the wool’s raw qualities, embracing its natural texture and tone. Each variation tells a story of the land it comes from — the grazing, the climate, the care.
The Making
Once sourced, the wool is spun and woven in small batches before being shaped into the halyard — a defining detail in our design.
Our production partners assemble and finish each chair by hand, ensuring precision and integrity at every stage. The result is a meeting of Faroese material honesty and design sensibility — nature and refinement in balance.

The ConnectionThe Wool Flag Halyard is more than a component — it’s a link between people, place, and process.
By working directly with Faroese producers, we help sustain traditional craftsmanship and a circular way of making. The material carries its history into modern design, creating a tangible bridge between past and present.
At Thorup, the Faroese wool represents what design can be: grounded, responsible, and full of life.
In every thread lies a reminder that beauty begins with honesty — and that true craftsmanship is built on respect for nature and the people who work with it.
Certifications
Certifications provide a clear framework for responsible production and help ensure transparency throughout the value chain. The Noel Chair Series is certified with the EU Ecolabel — the official environmental label of the European Union.
This certification sets strict standards for environmental performance across a product’s entire life cycle: from material sourcing and production to use, durability, and end-of-life recyclability. It guarantees reduced emissions, responsible material choices, and long-lasting quality.
“The Faroese wool represents what design can be: grounded, responsible, and full of life. In every thread lies a reminder that, for us, good design begins with honesty — and that true craftsmanship is built on respect for materials, the people who work with it, and those who will use it.”
